Question: Is this the worst time to be looking for work?
Dear Ellis,
I've outgrown my current job and was hoping to change jobs as soon as possible, but with all this talk about the sequester and furloughs, is this the worst time to be looking for work?

Answer
Dear DC Job Hunter,
It's tough to figure out what effect the sequester will have. Usually, when there's some kind of economic event, you try to figure out what's obvious. In this case, it seems that the defense industry might not be a great place to look into at this point. In 2008, it seemed clear that investment banking was not going to be a great target. Other than those clear conclusions, the first thing you need to do is figure out both (a) what do you want to do and (b) what's important to you in terms of your quality of life. The targets have to come first.
You can find some excellent job search resources on my website. And if you can just wait another week or two, my new book In Search of the Fun-Forever Job will be out and you can read more about creating targets to make your search more successful.
